Ellie’s story

One of our therapists describes her work with a child at Bristol Children’s Hospital.

Ellie is a patient on the adolescent ward. She has learning difficulties and complex medical needs. Ellie has really benefited from the musical interactions that we have had together, showing this by enormous smiles and the desire to reach out to me, despite difficulties with moving her body.  I have been able to give her a musical voice by singing with her mouth movements, whilst accompanying her with a wide variety of instruments. The eye contact that she gives me lets me know that she is delighted to be able to communicate with me. I have been able to help calm Ellie at times when she has been in incredible pain and provide the musical background for her and her mum dancing and smiling together. Music therapy has had a wonderful impact on this family’s life.
